Characteristics of Vertebrates
One specific class of chordates is vertebrates. All vertebrates have a backbone (also called the spinal column or spine). The backbone is a series of structures that surrounds the spinal cord, or nerve cord. The spinal cord connects the nerves in the body to those of the brain. The backbone is not a single bone, but a series of connected bones that are called vertebrae. These vertebrae are important for supporting and protecting the spinal cord from damage.
There are specific characteristics that all vertebrates share. All have well developed organ systems including a digestive system with two openings, a mouth and an anus. Vertebrates also have a circulatory system that moves blood through the body and a nervous system that includes a brain. There are five main groups of vertebrates. These groups are fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. |
